Gold Standard 100% Whey Is a Great Value for an Introductory Protein Powder Supplement

When you first start looking for a protein powder supplement, all you really want is something affordable that’s going to taste good and is what it says it is – protein!

Based on these 3 criteria, Gold Standard 100% Whey is a great fit.

We’ve included it as #3 on our best whey protein powder supplements list; which represents our expert preferences and recommendations on whey protein powders.

Review of Gold Standard 100% Whey Ingredients

The brand name “Optimum Nutrition” instills a sense of quality, but when you stack onto that “gold standard” followed by “100% Whey”, well, how could any other product be better?

Well, you may be surprised how average this “optimum, gold standard, 100%” product actually is. Go ahead and take a look at 4 of their ingredient labels.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey

As you can see, Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard 100% Whey is a combination of whey isolate, whey concentrate, whey peptides, and an assortment of flavors (natural and artificial), artificial sweeteners, artificial dyes, and moderate preservatives (this part wasn’t too bad).

To list it out, the average content of Gold Standard 100% Whey is:

  • Whey Blend (Isolate, Concentrate, and Peptides)
  • Natural and Artificial Flavors
  • Sucralose (Artificial Sweetener)
  • Lecithin
  • Artificial Dyes (to make strawberry red, etc)

All this means is that, Gold Standard 100% Whey is more similar to all the other brands ‘generic’ whey protein supplements than any of us ever thought.

Gold Standard 100% Whey Cost / Value Analysis

So, Gold Standard 100% Whey doesn’t contain a list of high-end ‘optimum’ or ‘gold standard’ ingredients. But hey, just look at the price…

  • 14 Servings Averages $15
  • 30 Servings Averages $30
  • 50 Servings Averages $48
  • 77 Servings Averages $60

Those are pretty darn cheap prices. So, while you are not getting a ‘premium whey protein’ like you thought you were getting, you are still getting a good deal on standard ‘generic’ quality whey protein.

Editor’s Note: But in Optimum Nutrition’s defense, Gold Standard 100% Whey tastes much better than most generic brands, even if they are using artificial flavors and sweeteners to achieve it.

Optimum Nutrition Also Makes a “Natural” Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder

For the same relative price, you can also get a ‘natural’ Gold Standard 100% Whey by Optimum Nutrition. In this variation, the artificial flavors and sweeteners are removed/replaced with natural ones.

Due to these changes, you shouldn’t expect the natural variations to taste as good.

If you look deeper into the label for Optimum’s Natural 100% Whey, you will notice the ingredient: Rebaudioside A. Don’t fret, this is like an ultra-purified form of stevia.

When and How to Take Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder

So, how do you take your Gold Standard 100% Whey anyways? Good question.

We believe that the best times to take your protein supplement, are, alongside food as a supplement.

So, you can add protein to your post workout meal by having a shake with your food after you eat. Or, you can protein up your breakfast by having a shake with your cheerios. Basically, why have multiple meals throughout the day, and multiple corresponding insulin spikes, when you can just use your protein powder to enhance your standard number of meals?

Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Protein Round-Up

Don’t get us wrong, Gold Standard 100% Whey is a fantastic protein powder. It’s just, we don’t want you to assume that there is anything premium about it, just because of its name. At the end of the day, it’s a well-priced widely-distributed protein powder made by one of the largest supplement companies in the world.

So, if you are looking to get your hands on some Gold Standard 100% Whey, you can head over to Amazon to see all the current prices. Otherwise, we encourage you to check out our favorite protein supplements. Just look for ‘best whey protein’ in our site-search above.

I have used a wide range of proteins from many different brands. I can confidently say I will be sticking with this protein from now on. It is great tasting and has a very smooth texture. It can also be a great addition to pancakes, oats, yoghurts, protein flap jacks etc. Most importantly it contains high amounts of Isolates so is great for post work out absorption.
