10 Best Whey Protein Powders for Men and Women

Best Whey ProteinIf you have had any exposure to the fitness world, you most certainly have heard of the importance of protein powder. It’s no gimmick.  Protein supplementation is perhaps the single most important element in fitness nutrition.

What does protein do? In short, protein provides your body with the building blocks needed to repair and grow. It is essential for human survival and is a crucial component of every cell in your body.

In regards to weight lifting and exercise, protein is essential for muscle building and recovery. Without proper amounts of protein in your diet, work outs could ultimately reduce muscle mass leaving you smaller and weaker then when you started. Its a pretty big deal.

Best Protein Powder Ranking Factors:

  1. Highest quality protein sources
  2. Best tasting protein powders
  3. Consistency and reliability of product
  4. Brand reputation

Using these metrics, we formulated the top 10 best protein powders list below.

But enough of that, lets get into the rankings so you can make a purchase and hit the gym. The following protein powder supplements are in reverse order of awesomeness.

10 Best Protein Powder Supplements

#10 Cellucor COR-Performance Whey

Performance WheyCor-Performance whey protein is the flagship protein powder that Cellucor is sticking with. It is an affordable and great tasting whey protein powder compared to other low-cost brands.

Protein Composition: Cellucor’s Performance Whey contains a mixture of whey isolate and whey concentrate protein totaling 24 grams per serving.

Performance Whey Flavors: Cellucor’s Whey comes in 8 different flavors with an average flavor rating of 8.3/10.

Reasons not to buy: You may not be interested in Performance Whey if you desire strictly whey isolate protein, zero carb protein, protein derived from grass-fed cattle, or want to avoid artificial flavors/sweeteners/preservatives.

Conclusion on Performance Whey: Cellucor’s Performance Whey is a reasonable option if you are on a tight budget and prefer to buy a product in-store versus online. Likewise, if you find this product on sale, then you may be more likely to buy it.

#9 Muscletech Nitro-Tech

Nitro-Tech ProteinMuscletech is without a doubt the marketing wizards of the supplement world. It seems like every year, they have the ‘newest cutting edge’ supplement technology… Just to conveniently disappear the following year. In terms of protein, they have quite a few variants with Nitro-tech being the most popular.

Protein Composition: Muscletech’s Nitro-Tech comes in a standard form with a premium whey blend and whey concentrate blend; as well as a 100% Gold that contains the same protein sources. Standard Nitro-Tech totals 30 grams per serving and 100% Gold Nitro-tech totals 24 grams.

Nitro-Tech Flavors: Currently Nitro-Tech comes in 5 flavors with an average flavor satisfaction ranking of 8.1/10.

Reasons not to buy: Same reasons as Cellucor’s Performance Whey. This protein is pretty mainstream and not a cut above the rest in terms of quality or flavoring.

Conclusion on Nitro-Tech Whey: Nitro-Tech has serious flashy advertising and big claims on their bottles, however at the end of the day it’s particularly similar to other mainstream brands. The best times to stock up on Nitro-Tech is during seasonal sales.

#8 EAS Myoplex Protein

EAS Protein PowderEAS has always been a dependable source of sports nutrition products. Whereas Cellucor and Muscletech have always had a heavy advertising background, EAS has been more of a product focused company. You can distinctly see this when you evaluate EAS protein products: EAS Myoplex Original and 100% Whey Protein.

Protein Composition: Myoplex contains whey protein concentrate, casein, and milk protein isolate totaling 42 grams; while EAS 100% Whey contains whey protein concentrate totaling 30 grams.

Myoplex Flavors: EAS Myoplex comes in 3 flavors, while 100% Whey comes in 4. Average flavor satisfaction is around 8.1/10.

Reasons not to buy: Compared to Muscletech and Cellucor, Myoplex is a smart buy. There are less additives, and more protein per scoop. However, Myoplex isn’t the highest quality sourced protein, nor is it naturally flavored and sweetened.

Conclusion on EAS Myoplex Protein: There really isn’t anything wrong with it unless you are a picky consumer, or have food allergies. For the average protein user EAS does a good job taking care of your whey protein needs, in a delicious way.

#7 Dymatize ISO100 Whey Protein Powder

ISO 100 WheyDymatize is a supplement company that’s been around for quite a while like EAS and Muscletech, and like EAS they lean more towards quality and less hype. Of their protein products, ISO100 is the best.

Protein Composition: ISO100 contains hydrolyzed whey protein isolate and whey protein isolate totaling 25 grams per serving.

Dymatize ISO100 Flavors: ISO100 comes in 11 different flavors, and has a great flavor satisfaction score of 8.9/10 on average.

Reasons not to buy: contains sucralose and artificial flavors like proteins ranking 8, 9, and 10. Though the actual protein quality is higher, being an isolate versus concentrate blends.

Conclusion on Dymatize ISO100 Protein: Dymatize is a solid choice if you are seeking out a lean whey protein isolate that just has to taste good. Yes, there are better products, but this will do if you don’t mind the cons listed above.

#6 GNC Wheybolic Extreme 60

GNC Wheybolic ExtremeIf you’ve set foot into a GNC, then you’ve surely been pitched their favorite and ‘best GNC protein’… Good old Wheybolic Extreme 60. I mean, don’t you want to be extreme, bro? Alright, so obviously its not the best if GNC employees are forced to push it so hard, but it isn’t all bad either.

Protein Composition: Wheybolic contains both hydrolyzed whey protein isolate and whey protein isolate just like Dymatize ISO100, except Wheybolic totals at 60 grams per 3 scoop serving.

GNC Wheybolic Flavors: Wheybolic Extreme 60 comes in 7 flavors with an average flavor satisfaction of 8.7/10.

Reasons not to buy: As GNC’s flagship whey protein powder, Wheybolic does contain isolate protein. However, they do still utilize artificial flavors and sucralose which for some is going to be a deal breaker. Not to mention this stuff is pricey and no one really likes a product that is pushed so aggressively. Back off sales reps!

Conclusion on GNC Wheybolic Protein Powder: Overall it’s a good protein powder for those that don’t mind its price and don’t mind sucralose. At its full serving, that’s 60 grams of protein! But, when buying remember that GNC sells a large collection of different, lesser quality protein supplements – so make sure you get the correct one.

#5 BioTrust Low Carb

Biotrust proteinBioTrust is a smaller supplement brand that focuses on the quality of their products, and most importantly, what they do not put in their products. With that being said, BioTrust uses protein from hormone-free cattle.

Protein Composition: BioTrust Low Carb utilizes a blend of casein, whey isolate, milk protein concentrate, and whey protein concentrate from hormone free cattle totaling 25 grams per serving.

BioTrust Flavors: BioTrust Low Carb comes in 6 naturally flavored and sweetened flavors, with a flavor satisfaction rating of 8.1/10.

Reasons not to buy: BioTrust is a good protein complex, however if you want a pure protein isolate then this isn’t it.

Conclusion on BioTrust Low Carb Protein: BioTrust Low Carb is great because it has well-sourced protein a well as doesn’t contain artificial ingredients. However, there is also more to be wanted in regards to whey isolate content and store usability.

#4 Gold Standard ON Whey Protein

100% Whey Protein PowderOptimum Nutrition’s own Gold Standard 100% Whey is easily the most popular and widely sold whey protein powder on the market, no question. However despite its popularity, it doesn’t have the all-out quality that you would expect. Rather, their ‘gold standard’ label is much like Muscletech’s ‘gold whey’ label – meaning, it’s just marketing.

Protein Composition: Gold Standard 100% Whey contains a blend of whey isolate, whey concentrate, and whey peptides totaling 24 grams per serving.

100% Whey Flavors: ON Gold Standard Whey comes in over 14 different flavor options with an average flavor satisfaction of 8.5/10.

Reasons not to buy: While the price-point is good, the protein quality is questionable and Optimum Nutrition uses a lot of artificial flavors, sweeteners, and even artificial dyes in their products. This will matter for some.

Conclusion on Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein: Overall Gold Standard 100% Whey is a popular option that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon! While it isn’t the best, not everyone is looking for the best. If you just want a product that delivers 24 grams of good tasting whey protein powder, then this is it.

What we’ve learned so far regarding protein powder manufacturers

I’m sure that you’ve noticed thus far that every single one of these brands offer a wide selection of different types of protein powders.

This seems cool, but we wonder – why don’t they just offer us their best protein powder? Really, a lot of this comes down to marketing, not actually serving us, the end users.

Our 3 top ranking whey protein powder supplement makers are a bit different, and do bring their best protein forward.

#3 Naked Whey: Grass-Fed Whey and Less Naked Whey Concentrate

Grass-fed wheyA brand that in our opinion does source and additive conscious sports supplements well is Naked Nutrition. In terms of whey protein, they make a popular unflavored zero-additive grass-fed whey concentrate, as well as a ‘less naked’ flavored whey concentrate.

Protein Composition: Both unflavored and flavored variants yield 25 grams of whey concentrate per serving.

Naked Whey Flavors: Naked Whey comes in approximately 4 flavors, with flavored options providing an averaged 8.1/10 satisfaction.

Reasons not to buy: Naked Whey products are a bit expensive, and do not contain whey protein isolate. So, there are better options still. Likewise, if getting a grass-fed zero additive product isn’t important to you, then you can save money with other products.

Conclusion on Naked Whey and Less Naked Whey Protein: Naked Nutrition has done a fantastic job with their protein products. We love that they are derived from grass-fed cattle and contain just protein.

#2 Staunch Nation Whey Isolate

Whey Isolate ProteinStaunch Nation has quite a few creative products ranging from their “Koala Freak” pre workout to their “wet” BCAA + Hydration intra workout supplement. For recovery, Staunch’s frontline protein is their whey isolate.

Protein Composition: Each serving contains 24 grams of pure whey isote.

Whey Isolate Flavors: There are currently 3 flavors, with “Hot Chokkie” ranking the best at 8.9/10 flavor satisfaction.

Reasons not to buy: Contains some artificial flavors and sucralose. However, a better alternative to the Muscletechs, Optimums, and Cellucors.

Conclusion on Staunch Whey Isolate Protein: Staunch brings forward a great tasting and affordable whey protein isolate that is just that – pure whey protein isolate. There are some artificial flavors and sucralose which some people may not like, but for the average consumer this is it.

#1 Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Isolate Protein Powder

Transparent Labs ProteinIf you want the best quality, sourcing, taste, and zero artificial sweeteners – then Transparent Labs 100% Grass-fed whey isolate is the only option. This is the highest quality protein supplement currently on the market.

Protein Composition: Each serving contains 27.5 grams of grass-fed whey isolate protein.

100% Grass-fed Flavors: This protein comes in French vanilla and milk chocolate flavors with flavor satisfaction averaging the highest, 9.2/10.

Reasons not to buy: 100% Grass-fed is a premium protein product, and costs a bit more compared to the concentrates and lower-quality sourced options. This matters to some people but not all.

Conclusion on Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Isolate Protein: While this protein does cost a few dollars more each, it does deliver a full 30 servings of the highest quality whey protein isolate available. If you care to have the best, this is it.

Concluding the best whey protein powder supplements

Specialty Protein Types To Consider:

On this ranking, we focus on whey protein powder which is known for its fast absorption, easy digestion, and generally great taste.

  • If you are a hard gainer, you may want to consider a mass gaining protein.
  • If you are a vegan, you will want to consider plant-based vegan friendly protein powders.

Pinch-a-penny protein powders to avoid:

  • Six Star Whey Protein Powders
  • Body Fortress Protein Powders

Unless you give absolutely zero percent about taste, these two popular value-store protein products should be avoided. If you are already taking one of these, know that you can establish better flavor and quality for not a whole lot more cash.

  1. Totally agree with this ranking… very thorough job. I LOVE BioTrust. Great brand. Great protein.

  2. Personally, I think musclepharm makes the best protein powder.

  3. Gold Standard basic protein for me. BEST
I experienced with: Ronnie Cole Pro-Antium (double cookie): AWFUL taste for me, the first protein i could not drink (sold it)
I also tried SYNTRAX Matrix 5.0 and i was AMAZED by the taste, mixability and overall… I can not believe that something THAT good can uphold to such ingredient results as labelled on it! Anyone experience with it?

  4. Rajesh Gunjan says

Can i order bio turst low carb supplements in India ? this Protein Powder is not available here..

  5. I’d love to see my favorite protein drink analyzed like this! I use Syntax Nectors. I just don’t like mixing with milk. I prefer water, because it’s not as heavy and it’s easier to drink. I know there is no sugar or carbs. I’m an older woman supplementing for weight loss and to get a sufficient amount of protein per day. Not a huge meat eater.

  6. If you could check Beyond Raw at GNC
